Piastri Dominates Spanish Grand Prix Amid Verstappen Controversy

McLaren secures 1–2 finish as Verstappen’s collision with Russell sparks debate

BARCELONA, SPAIN — Oscar Piastri clinched his fifth win of the 2025 Formula One season at the Spanish Grand Prix on June 1, leading a McLaren one-two finish with teammate Lando Norris. Piastri’s victory extends his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 10 points over Norris.

The race was marred by a late-race incident involving Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ George Russell. On lap 64, Verstappen collided with Russell after being instructed to let him pass, resulting in a 10-second penalty that dropped Verstappen from fifth to tenth place. The incident has led to calls for stricter penalties, with former champion Nico Rosberg suggesting a disqualification.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc capitalized on the chaos to secure third place, marking his second consecutive podium finish. George Russell finished fourth, followed by Nico Hülkenberg in fifth, who achieved Sauber’s best result of the season.

Lewis Hamilton, now with Ferrari, finished sixth and expressed frustration over the team’s performance, stating, “I’m sure they won’t,” when asked if Ferrari would find solutions to their ongoing struggles.
