Governments Announce New Affordable Housing Units in Peterborough
Peterborough, ON – The federal and provincial governments are strengthening their commitment to affordable housing with the official opening of a new development at 681 Monaghan Road in Peterborough. The project, backed by more than $1.6 million in joint federal-provincial investment, includes seven additional units supported through an $830,015 funding boost to address urgent housing needs in the community.
The announcement was made by Emma Harrison, MP for Peterborough, on behalf of Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson, and Brian Saunderson, Parliamentary Assistant to Ontario Housing Minister Rob Flack. They were joined by Peterborough Mayor Jeff Leal and Bonnie Clark, Warden of Peterborough County.
“Our government continues to work hand-in-hand with our federal and municipal partners to strengthen our communities and protect people across every corner of our province. Today’s announcement is the latest example of our ongoing commitment to ensuring vulnerable people in Peterborough have access to safe and affordable housing,” said Rob Flack Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
New Homes for Vulnerable Residents
The six-storey affordable housing building includes 53 units in total:
-
37 one-bedroom units
-
11 two-bedroom units
-
5 three-bedroom units
The project is designed to support individuals and families facing challenges in accessing stable housing. By offering a mix of unit sizes, the development aims to meet the diverse needs of residents in the Peterborough area.
Partnership Under the National Housing Strategy
This funding was made possible through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative (OPHI), part of the Canada-Ontario Bilateral Agreement under the National Housing Strategy. With the latest contribution, the total government support for this development surpasses $1.6 million.
Building a Stronger Housing Sector
Officials emphasized that collaborative efforts with municipalities and non-profits are critical to tackling Canada’s housing affordability crisis.
“As we build a strong Canadian housing sector, purposeful collaboration will be essential,” officials noted in the announcement. “That means working hand-in-hand with the non-profit sector to bring down costs and build homes at a scale and speed not seen since the Second World War.”
This project reflects ongoing federal and provincial commitments to expand affordable housing supply, ease pressures on vulnerable populations, and strengthen communities across Ontario.
