Paul Calandra
Paul Calandra, born on May 13, 1970, is a distinguished Canadian politician serving as a prominent figure in both federal and provincial arenas. Education and Early Career:
Calandra pursued his higher education at Carleton University, where he studied history with a minor in political science. While his academic journey was interrupted, he later completed his degree through a correspondence course, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in November 2008. Before venturing into politics, Calandra gained valuable experience working in the insurance industry from 1995 to 2003. He then served as chief of staff to Steve Gilchrist, the PC MPP for Scarborough East in the Mike Harris government.
Political Journey:
Calandra’s political career began with an aspiration for federal office. He contested in the 2000 federal election as the Canadian Alliance candidate for the Toronto riding of Scarborough East but was unsuccessful. However, his perseverance paid off in 2008 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the York Region riding of Oak Ridges—Markham, representing the Conservative Party. Throughout his tenure in the federal House of Commons, Calandra held various roles, including serving as parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Stephen Harper from 2013 to 2015.
In the 2015 federal election, Paul Calandra contested in the newly formed Markham—Stouffville riding but was defeated. Undeterred, he transitioned into provincial politics, winning the Markham—Stouffville riding in the 2018 Ontario general election. Since then, he has been an integral part of Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet, holding several key ministerial positions.
Provincial Cabinet:
Calandra’s contributions to Ontario’s governance have been significant. In 2019, he was appointed as the government house leader and minister without portfolio in Premier Ford’s cabinet. His role expanded in 2021 when he became the first minister of legislative affairs, a testament to his expertise and leadership abilities. In 2022, Calandra assumed responsibility as the minister of long-term care, overseeing critical reforms in the healthcare sector. Later, in September 2023, he took on the role of minister of municipal affairs and housing, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to addressing diverse policy areas.
