Orillia to Host 2026 Ontario Winter Games, Welcoming 2,800 Young Athletes
Province invests $1.32 million to boost sport tourism and community pride
ORILLIA — Orillia has been officially named the host city for the 2026 Ontario Winter Games, an announcement that is expected to deliver both a major economic boost and a celebration of athletic excellence to the South Central Ontario community.
The province is investing more than $1.32 million to support the delivery of the Games, which are projected to bring more than 2,800 athletes between the ages of 12 and 18 to the region. The Games will take place over two weekends—February 19 to 22 and February 26 to March 1, 2026—and will include competitions in up to 20 winter sports, including curling, ringette, snowboarding and cross-country skiing.
Ontario’s Minister of Sport, Neil Lumsden, praised Orillia’s winning bid, saying the Games “will build on the success of past events hosted by Orillia and provide an incredible opportunity to drive domestic tourism to the region, boosting the economy and showcasing the fantastic attractions throughout the area.”
The economic impact is expected to exceed $5 million, as athletes, coaches, families and spectators converge on Orillia’s hotels, restaurants, and local businesses.
Orillia is no stranger to hosting large-scale provincial sporting events. The city previously held the Ontario Winter Games in 2018 and 2020, and most recently hosted the 2024 Ontario 55+ Winter Games. That experience helped shape a compelling case for the city’s return as host, according to Mayor Don McIsaac.
“We are committed to delivering an exceptional event that unites our community and showcases Orillia as a premier sport tourism destination,” said McIsaac. “We look forward to collaborating with the Ministry of Sport, our dedicated volunteers and community partners to create a memorable experience for all participants.”
Local MPP Jill Dunlop echoed the excitement, adding that the Games will inspire local youth and provide meaningful economic and social benefits. “Hosting the Games will bring lasting benefits to Orillia; from boosting local businesses to inspiring the next generation of athletes right here at home,” she said.
The Ontario Games program, led by the Ministry of Sport, selects host cities through a competitive bid process for five major multi-sport events: the Ontario Summer and Winter Games for youth, the 55+ Summer and Winter Games, and the Ontario Parasport Games.
Beyond the economic injection, officials say the event plays a vital role in developing the next generation of Canadian athletes, providing a springboard to national and international competitions such as the Canada Games, and even the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
