Ontario Secures $207M Investment to Expand Advanced Manufacturing in Innisfil

Northern Transformer Corporation’s new facility will create 151 jobs and strengthen Ontario’s energy supply chain

Ontario is reinforcing its position as a hub for advanced manufacturing with a major investment in the province’s energy infrastructure supply chain. Northern Transformer Corporation (NTC), a leading Canadian producer of high-voltage power transformers, is investing nearly $207 million to establish a new state-of-the-art facility in Innisfil, creating 151 new jobs and expanding the province’s capacity to support North America’s growing electrification needs.

The project, announced September 18, represents NTC’s entry into the large power transformer market, a critical component of grid modernization and industrial electrification. To support the expansion, the provincial government is contributing $10.5 million through the Invest Ontario Fund.

Meeting rising energy demands

Demand for power transformers has been climbing in step with the growth of energy-intensive sectors such as data centres, steel manufacturing, and mining operations. NTC’s new facility will be capable of manufacturing and testing transformers with power handling capacities of up to 500kV and 750MVA, providing Ontario with the ability to supply large-scale industrial projects while reducing reliance on imported products.

By sourcing materials such as wiring, insulation, and electrical steel from Ontario-based suppliers, the facility will also bolster domestic supply chains, creating ripple effects for manufacturers across the province.

Vic Fedeli, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, said the project is a signal of Ontario’s stability and competitiveness during uncertain global conditions.

“Northern Transformer’s investment in Innisfil sends a clear and compelling message: In the face of global uncertainty, Ontario remains a stable, resilient and competitive partner to do business with,” Fedeli said. “Through Invest Ontario, our government is proud to support a project that aligns with our unyielding commitment to create high-value jobs for Ontario workers, strengthen Ontario-made supply chains and position the province for lasting prosperity.”

Local jobs and global competitiveness

NTC’s expansion will employ over 150 skilled workers in Innisfil, providing opportunities in engineering, manufacturing, testing, and supply chain management. The move also advances the province’s push to build more resilient infrastructure and secure Ontario’s leadership in clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

Alexei Miecznikowski, President and CEO of Northern Transformer Corporation, said the facility will help meet a continental demand for reliable, domestically manufactured transformers.

“We’re proud to expand our footprint in Ontario to meet the rising demand for mission-critical large power transformers across North America,” Miecznikowski said. “This investment not only boosts our production capacity and technical capabilities, but also drives job creation, innovation and supply chain growth in the region.”

Strengthening Ontario’s industrial strategy

The announcement is part of Ontario’s broader $200 billion infrastructure and industrial investment strategy, which includes expanding clean energy capacity, modernizing the grid, and securing supply chains for critical sectors.

For Ontario, securing investments like NTC’s demonstrates how Northern and Southern Ontario economies can work together — with Northern Ontario’s mining and materials feeding advanced manufacturing in the south, and southern expertise in manufacturing boosting the province’s ability to compete globally.

NTC’s expansion highlights how Ontario’s secure supply chains, skilled workforce, and stable business environment are helping the province attract projects that would otherwise go to international competitors.

Looking ahead

Once operational, the Innisfil facility will play a central role in Ontario’s clean energy and industrial future, helping to power new housing, hospitals, data centres, and large-scale industries while supporting the province’s economic growth targets.

By combining private investment with public support, the project underscores Ontario’s strategy to build resilient, made-in-Ontario solutions for today’s and tomorrow’s energy needs.
