Ontario Names Hassaan Basit as First Chief Conservation Executive to Lead Modernization Efforts
Province appoints veteran conservation leader to new role aimed at strengthening oversight, streamlining operations, and supporting housing and infrastructure development
TORONTO — The Ontario government has appointed Hassaan Basit as the province’s first-ever Chief Conservation Executive, a newly created position aimed at making conservation authorities more effective and responsive to community needs. The announcement is part of Ontario’s plan to modernize conservation authorities, cut red tape, and protect both the environment and economic growth in the province.
“Our government recognizes the vital role that Ontario’s conservation authorities play in watershed management and protecting communities from natural hazards,” said Todd McCarthy, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. “I look forward to working with Hassaan Basit as we bring common-sense conservation principles to communities across Ontario.”
Mr. Basit, who assumes the role on August 4, is currently the Chief Administrative Officer of the City of Burlington. He previously served as President and CEO of Conservation Halton, where he led projects in flood risk management, environmental restoration, sustainable development, and outdoor recreation.
“Over my 20 years in the conservation sector, I’ve learned that effective flood protection is not just about safeguarding the environment — it’s about enabling prosperous, sustainable communities,” said Basit. “Modernization is essential to ensure Ontario’s conservation authorities remain focused, effective, and ready to meet Ontario’s growing needs.”
Ontario has 36 conservation authorities that help protect against natural hazards, ensure safe drinking water sources, and review development applications near hazardous lands. Since 2019, the province has taken steps to improve oversight, governance, and decision-making at conservation authorities to ensure they can better serve communities.
