Ontario Invests $30 Million in Cancer Prevention for Firefighters
BOLTON — The Ontario government has announced a $30 million investment over three years to support cancer prevention efforts for firefighters across the province. This funding will be allocated through the Fire Protection Grant to 374 municipal fire departments, enabling them to purchase specialized equipment and make infrastructure upgrades that reduce the risks of exposure to fire-related contaminants and chemicals.
“Firefighters put service over self each and every day, facing dangerous situations to protect their communities,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner at the announcement on December 19. “Today’s announcement is another concrete step to make sure these heroes get the care, resources, and support they deserve.”
The funds will allow fire services to acquire specialized washing and drying equipment for decontaminating bunker gear and wildland firefighting coveralls, as well as install proper air purification and ventilation systems in their facilities. These upgrades are critical in mitigating the long-term health risks posed by hazardous chemicals firefighters encounter during their work.

“Public safety is about more than just equipping our first responders with the tools they need on the job – it’s about ensuring they are looked after and supported both on and off the job,” added Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy.
Firefighters face significantly higher rates of cancer due to prolonged exposure to toxic substances during firefighting operations. Each year in Canada, 50 to 60 firefighters die from cancer, with half of those cases occurring in Ontario.
The funding is part of the government’s 2024 Budget: Building a Better Ontario, which emphasizes enhancing public safety through investments in the health and well-being of first responders.
This latest initiative underscores Ontario’s commitment to protecting those who risk their lives to protect their communities, providing critical resources to safeguard the health of firefighters now and in the future.
