Ontario Government Unveils Massive Redevelopment of Mount Sinai Hospital

TORONTO — In a landmark achievement, the Ontario government has announced the completion of Mount Sinai Hospital’s largest redevelopment project to date. The ambitious project, backed by a provincial investment of $383 million, aims to ensure that residents of Toronto and surrounding areas have access to high-quality healthcare services when they need them.

The redevelopment has significantly expanded and modernized the hospital, covering more than 323,000 square feet. Notable upgrades include an expanded and redesigned emergency department, 19 renovated operating rooms, two of which are entirely new, and a redeveloped Intensive Care Unit (ICU) that now includes 36 additional beds. Other enhancements feature an expanded medical/surgical inpatient unit with 28 extra beds, a renovated hospital kitchen, and a newly modernized space for the ambulatory oncology program.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones expressed the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure across the province. “Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is making record investments in hospital infrastructure to expand capacity across the province,” Jones stated. “We are excited to mark the completion of the largest redevelopment in Mount Sinai Hospital’s history, ensuring families across the Toronto region are provided with the right care, in the right place, for decades to come.”

“Mount Sinai Hospital plays a vital role in our health-care system,” said Dr. Gary Newton, President and CEO of Sinai Health. “The expansion and modernization of Mount Sinai’s facilities was essential to provide new and expanded care for the people of Toronto, and specialized programs for all Ontarians. We thank the Ontario government for this investment in enabling Sinai Health to create state-of-the-art spaces and services that will serve our communities today and in the future.”

The extensive renovations and upgrades at Mount Sinai Hospital align with the Ontario government’s broader strategy outlined in “Your Health: A Plan For Connected and Convenient Care.” This initiative focuses on making healthcare more accessible and efficient for people of all ages, with a strong emphasis on reducing wait times and expanding services within local communities.

The successful completion of Mount Sinai’s redevelopment marks a significant milestone in Ontario’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its healthcare system. With improved facilities and expanded capacity, Mount Sinai Hospital is well-positioned to meet the growing healthcare needs of Toronto’s diverse population, ensuring that residents receive top-notch medical care in a modern, state-of-the-art environment.
