Ontario Government Invests in Supportive Housing for Youth in Whitby
Whitby, Ontario – In a bid to address the pressing issue of youth homelessness and provide support for vulnerable individuals, the Ontario government has announced a significant investment of $1.2 million towards the creation of six new supportive housing units for youth in Whitby. Managed by Durham Youth Services, these units aim to offer transitional housing for youth aged 19 to 24 who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness, mental health challenges, and addiction issues.
The three-story building will feature self-contained units, with upper and mid-level units each consisting of three bedrooms, a kitchen, and a shared bathroom among the residents. Additionally, a two-bedroom apartment in the basement, complete with its own kitchen and bathroom, will be designated for youth who are acquainted with each other or those supporting a young family. Shared amenities such as a common laundry room and outdoor living space will contribute to fostering a sense of community and support among residents.

Associate Minister Rob Flack emphasized the importance of such supportive housing initiatives in enhancing the well-being of both residents and the community at large. This investment, made through the Social Services Relief Fund, reflects the government’s commitment to providing housing solutions for vulnerable populations in Whitby and across Ontario.
This announcement comes as part of the broader efforts of the Social Services Relief Fund, which has allocated over $1.2 billion to support municipal service managers and Indigenous program administrators in creating longer-term housing solutions for those experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
Furthermore, the Ontario government has pledged an additional $202 million annually towards homelessness prevention programs, including the Homelessness Prevention Program and Indigenous Supportive Housing Program. This significant investment underscores the government’s comprehensive approach to addressing housing insecurity and supporting vulnerable individuals across the province.
Local representatives, including Member of Provincial Parliament Lorne Coe and Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy, have hailed this initiative as a positive step forward in combating homelessness and providing vital support for youth in the community.
