Ontario Government Invests $7.2 Million in Agri-Food Innovation
GUELPH – The Ontario government has announced a significant investment of $7.2 million in 44 pioneering research and innovation projects, a move set to bolster the competitiveness of the province’s agriculture and food sector. This funding, allocated through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, highlights a collaborative effort between the provincial government, the University of Guelph, and Agricultural Research and Innovation Ontario (ARIO).
Speaking on the investment, Rob Flack, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, said, “We have a number of ambitious goals for the industry, and research and innovation will play a key role in helping us achieve them. Through this investment, we are creating an environment where farmers and agri-businesses can leverage the latest advancements to strengthen their operations and drive growth.”

The Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance is dedicated to advancing research that protects animal and plant health, strengthens production systems, increases environmental sustainability, and enhances productivity. Among the funded projects are several groundbreaking initiatives:
- Carbon Capture System: A project aimed at developing a system to store and reuse carbon dioxide in greenhouses, enhancing sustainability and reducing emissions.
- Fertilizer Optimization: Research focused on improving fertilizer management for winter wheat and vegetable crops to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers.
- Bio-Graphene Production: An initiative to create low-cost bio-graphene from agricultural residues, which can be used in electric batteries.
- Plastic Alternatives: Development of new materials to reduce dependence on single-use plastics.
- Harvesting Robot: Innovation in robotic technology to improve efficiency in tomato greenhouse harvesting.
Rene Van Acker, Vice President of Research and Innovation at the University of Guelph, emphasized the university’s pivotal role in these advancements: “With this investment, we will continue to train the next generation of agri-food leaders while ensuring a safe and healthy food supply for Ontarians.”
Lorne Hepworth, Chair of ARIO, added, “Innovative research like this keeps the agri-food industry at the cutting edge of best practices and new technologies, boosting competitiveness and sustainability.”
