Ontario Government and Shoppers Drug Mart Expand Menstrual Equity Initiative
BRAMPTON — The Ontario government is making strides to address period poverty by ensuring students across the province have access to free menstrual products. On July 29, 2024, Minister of Education Todd Smith announced a new three-year partnership with Shoppers Drug Mart, aimed at expanding Ontario’s Menstrual Equity Initiative. This collaboration will provide over 23 million menstrual products to students over the next three years, an increase of 3 million from the previous agreement.
“We know that when students can’t access or afford menstrual products, it often results in them missing school, work, or other activities – but we’re changing that,” stated Minister Smith. “Access to products through Ontario’s Menstrual Equity Initiative is just one more way we are removing barriers for women and girls so they can reach their full potential and realize their dreams.”
The agreement includes the provision of 1,380 dispensers in the first year to ensure the effective distribution of these products within schools. This expanded initiative represents an in-kind contribution valued at over $8 million from Shoppers Drug Mart.

Free menstrual products will be available to all school boards and school authorities across Ontario, including the Consortium Centre Jules-Léger, which will manage distribution based on local student needs.
Jeff Leger, President of Shoppers Drug Mart, emphasized the importance of the initiative, saying, “For too long, inequitable access to menstrual products has held millions back from reaching their full potential – every absent day of school or sick day at work is a missed opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. We’re proud to continue this important partnership with the Ontario government to ensure more students have access to the menstrual products they need and deserve.”
Charmaine Williams, Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity, added, “The continuation of the Menstrual Equity Initiative strengthens equality and inclusion in Ontario schools. By providing essential products, we are not only supporting the physical and emotional health of students but also enabling them to focus on their education and extracurricular activities without financial barriers. This initiative underscores Ontario’s commitment to fostering a supportive and healthy learning environment for every student across the province.”
The expansion of the Menstrual Equity Initiative is a significant step forward in promoting health, education, and equality for students in Ontario. The provincial government and Shoppers Drug Mart’s continued partnership aims to ensure that no student has to miss out on educational opportunities due to a lack of access to menstrual products.
