Geoff Owen Appointed Chair of Ontario Energy Board to Lead Province’s Future Energy Strategy

TORONTO — The Ontario government has appointed Geoff Owen as the new Chair of the Ontario Energy Board (OEB), strengthening leadership at a pivotal time as the province works to deliver a more affordable, reliable, and self-reliant energy system.

Supporting Ontario’s Long-Term Energy Plan

The appointment aligns with Ontario’s Energy for Generations strategy, the province’s first integrated energy plan designed to meet growing demand while keeping costs down for families and businesses. Minister of Energy and Mines Stephen Lecce said the decision reflects Ontario’s commitment to protecting its future through strong leadership in the energy sector.

“Ontario is forging ahead with an ambitious long-term energy plan that keeps costs down as we build the future,” Lecce stated. “Geoff has the experience and leadership at the OEB to help protect Ontario’s future by ensuring families and businesses can count on reliable, affordable, and clean energy.”

Owen’s Experience and Leadership

Mr. Owen brings extensive experience in regulatory affairs, business strategy, and public policy. He has served on the OEB Board since 2021, became Vice Chair in 2024, and has acted as Chair since April 2025. Prior to his OEB service, Owen held senior leadership roles at the Royal Bank of Canada and within government, and currently serves as Principal of Foresight Strategic Advisors.

His appointment ensures continuity and stability as Ontario advances its plan to expand energy supply, modernize infrastructure, and strengthen grid security amid rising demand and global uncertainty.

Role of the OEB in Ontario’s Energy Future

The OEB is Ontario’s independent regulator for the electricity and natural gas sectors. Under Owen’s leadership, it will continue overseeing efficient regulation and providing guidance to energy providers as the province builds out its long-term framework.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, this direction will not only safeguard current energy needs but also create jobs, drive economic growth, and enhance energy security for generations to come.
