Free Fishing Across Ontario This Father’s Day Weekend

Residents can cast a line without a licence on June 14 and 15 as province promotes outdoor fun and local tourism

TORONTO — The Ontario government is inviting residents to celebrate Father’s Day weekend with a free fishing opportunity across the province on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15, allowing Canadians to enjoy the outdoors without the need for a fishing licence.

The initiative, part of Ontario’s annual series of free fishing events, is designed to promote family-friendly outdoor activities while boosting local tourism and the economy.

“This Father’s Day weekend, take the opportunity to head outdoors, cast a line and create lasting memories with the people who matter most,” said Mike Harris, Ontario’s Minister of Natural Resources. “Whether it’s your first-time fishing or a time-honoured family tradition, this is a great way to explore Ontario’s beautiful lakes and rivers while supporting the local communities, jobs and businesses that depend on our province’s diverse fishing opportunities.”

Recreational fishing contributes approximately $1.75 billion annually to Ontario’s economy, with over one million licenced anglers supporting the sector. The Father’s Day weekend marks the third of four free fishing periods scheduled in 2025, with the next coming up during Family Fishing Week from June 28 to July 6.

While fishing licences are not required this weekend, participants must still follow all conservation licence limits, including catch and size restrictions, sanctuary rules, and other provincial fishing regulations.

All Canadian residents taking part must carry government-issued identification showing their name and date of birth. Outside of designated free fishing periods, most Ontarians between the ages of 18 and 64 need an Outdoors Card and valid fishing licence. However, veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members residing in Ontario can enjoy year-round free fishing.

For those new to fishing or looking for accessible resources, Ontario offers several tools and programs including:

  • Fish ON-Line to locate fishing spots

  • The TackleShare Program to borrow fishing equipment

  • The Learn to Fish program offering beginner tips and videos

Licences, information, and program access are available at huntandfishontario.com, with in-person purchases also offered at participating ServiceOntario locations and authorized retailers.
