Ontario Expands Uxbridge Hospital and Adds 192-Bed Long-Term Care Home

$8.9M investment advances redevelopment of Oak Valley Health site into full-service health campus for Durham Region

UXBRIDGE, ONTARIO — The Ontario government is investing an additional $8.9 million to advance the redevelopment of Oak Valley Health’s Uxbridge Hospital, bringing a new long-term care home and expanded services to the fast-growing Durham Region community.

The expansion will transform the site into a comprehensive campus of care that includes a 192-bed long-term care facility, a redeveloped hospital with enhanced diagnostic and emergency services, and a new ambulatory care centre aimed at improving access and reducing wait times.

“This investment is an important milestone in the hospital’s redevelopment,” said Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones. “It ensures families in Uxbridge can continue to access world-class care in their community for generations to come.”

The additional funding will support early-stage construction activities such as roadwork, re-grading, and site readiness for the expanded health-care complex.

“It brings us closer to a modern, expanded hospital that will connect more people in Uxbridge to high-quality care,” added MPP Peter Bethlenfalvy (Pickering–Uxbridge).

A Fully Integrated Health Campus

Once complete, the redevelopment will increase inpatient capacity from 20 to 31 hospital beds, expand key diagnostic and cardiorespiratory services, and boost laboratory and pharmacy capabilities. Emergency and ambulatory care services will also see increased access under the new model.

“The inclusion of a new long-term care home is an important component of this project,” said Paul Calandra, acting Minister of Long-Term Care. “It will provide local seniors with the care they need for generations to come.”

This integrated approach aligns with Ontario’s Your Health plan, which is focused on delivering connected, convenient care for residents across the province.

“This redevelopment reflects our vision of integrated care,” said Mark Fam, President and CEO of Oak Valley Health. “It brings together post-acute care, long-term care, ambulatory services, and primary care in a modern and accessible way.”

Part of a Province-Wide Hospital Expansion Plan

The Uxbridge project is part of Ontario’s broader $60 billion investment over 10 years in health infrastructure. That effort includes more than 50 major hospital projects province-wide and is expected to add approximately 3,000 new hospital beds to the system.

In 2024–25 alone, the province allocated more than $228 million to infrastructure upgrades at 129 hospitals and 58 community health facilities. Oak Valley Health received over $2.8 million through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund.

Next steps for the Uxbridge redevelopment include issuing a Request for Proposals in partnership with Infrastructure Ontario to begin major construction.
