Ontario Expands Long-Term Care Capacity with New Craigholme Redevelopment

AILSA CRAIG — Construction has officially begun on a project to expand and modernize Craigholme, a long-term care home in Ailsa Craig, Ontario. This initiative will add 13 new and 83 redeveloped long-term care beds, bringing the facility’s capacity to 96 residents. The redevelopment is part of the Ontario government’s broader plan to deliver 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province.

“Our government is building Ontario’s long-term care capacity, and we are building it where it is needed,” said Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Minister of Long-Term Care.

The two-storey expansion will feature three 32-bed residential home areas (RHAs), each equipped with its own dining room, lounge, activity spaces, and nurses’ work areas. The modernized facility will also include amenities such as a chapel, therapy room, bistro, and hair salon, providing a welcoming environment for its residents.

Local MPP Steve Pinsonneault highlighted the importance of the project for the region. “Our government is committed to accelerating the construction of long-term care homes, ensuring that our community’s seniors receive the care and support they deserve,” Pinsonneault stated.

The government’s funding for the project includes a Construction Funding Subsidy top-up, part of its ongoing investment in long-term care. The redeveloped Craigholme home is expected to welcome its first residents in early 2027.

This initiative aligns with Ontario’s commitment to improving long-term care services through four key pillars: enhancing staffing and care, improving quality and enforcement, building safe and modern facilities, and connecting seniors to more accessible services.

The expansion of Craigholme is a significant milestone for Ailsa Craig, ensuring seniors in the community will have access to high-quality care in a state-of-the-art facility.
