Ontario Completes Major Upgrades to Bay of Quinte Skyway Bridge
PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY — The Ontario government has finished a significant $63-million rehabilitation project on the Bay of Quinte Skyway Bridge, a vital link to Highway 401 for Prince Edward County and a key route for tourists visiting the region’s wine country.
Ric Bresee, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation, highlighted the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure. “Under Premier Ford’s leadership, we are making historic investments in roads, bridges, and highways across the province,” Bresee stated. “This includes widening Highway 401 and completing the Skyway Bridge, which will support drivers and families in eastern Ontario.”

The project involved replacing the bridge deck, repairing and reconstructing supports, and widening shoulders to enhance safety for both vehicles and pedestrians. With the bridge now fully operational, it will bolster the region’s growing economy.
Chief R. Donald Maracle of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte praised the collaboration between the community and the provincial government. “We acknowledge the extensive consultation and excellent working relationship established throughout this project,” Maracle said. “We look forward to continuing this partnership in the spirit of reconciliation.”
The 850-metre bridge connects Highway 401 with Prince Edward County via Highway 49, running through Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. Ontario plans to invest $28 billion over the next decade to address gridlock and improve transportation infrastructure across the province.
