Ontario Breaks Ground on 32-Bed Long-Term Care Expansion at Hoivakoti Finlandia Nursing Home in Sudbury
SUDBURY — Construction is officially underway at Hoivakoti Finlandia Nursing Home in Sudbury, where a 32-bed expansion is adding to the province’s commitment to modernize and grow long-term care capacity across Ontario. The project will bring the facility’s total to 144 long-term care beds, offering more seniors in Greater Sudbury a safe, modern place to call home.
The expansion is being supported through the Construction Funding Subsidy top-up, part of the Ford government’s plan to protect Ontario by investing in essential infrastructure, creating local jobs, and improving quality of care for seniors.
“Today marks a significant milestone for Greater Sudbury,” said John Jordan, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Long-Term Care. “When construction is complete, 32 additional residents will have a safe and modern place to call home.”
The newly built section will feature 32 private rooms, while the lower level will house a 3,000-square-foot onsite training facility for staff and placement students from local colleges and universities. This training centre will help address staffing needs and support skills development in the region.

Modern Amenities and Community Impact
Residents will benefit from amenities including a fitness centre, physiotherapy centre, and beauty salon. The expansion is scheduled to be completed and welcome new residents in fall 2026.
“This project is a testament to what we can achieve when government and community come together to care for seniors,” said Paul Lefebvre, Mayor of Greater Sudbury. “Thanks to the dedication of local partners and donors, 32 additional residents will soon have a safe, modern, and dignified place to call home.”
Part of Ontario’s Larger Long-Term Care Plan
This project supports the province’s commitment to build 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds by 2029, part of the government’s four-pillar plan to improve care for seniors:
-
Staffing and care.
-
Quality and enforcement.
-
Building modern, safe, and comfortable homes.
-
Connecting seniors with faster, more convenient services.
As of April 2025, Ontario has 147 projects underway or completed, representing nearly 24,000 new and redeveloped beds.
The home will continue to be operated by Finlandia Nursing Home Limited.
