Ontario Welcomes $165M Investment in York Region Biofuel Facility, Creating 52 Jobs
New plant converts organic waste into renewable natural gas, marking a major step in Ontario’s clean-energy manufacturing growth
The Ontario government has announced a major clean-energy manufacturing boost for York Region, welcoming a $165-million investment from the Convertus Group to build Canada’s first-of-its-kind biofuel facility in East Gwillimbury. The project will create 52 new good-paying jobs and strengthen the province’s position as a leader in waste-to-energy innovation.
The province is supporting the project with $2 million through the Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC) stream of the Regional Development Program.
A New Benchmark for Renewable Energy
Convertus – one of North America’s largest operators of organic waste management – will build a facility using advanced processing technology to convert municipal organic waste into renewable natural gas (RNG).
The facility will also be the first in Canada to use CO₂ liquefaction technology, capturing emissions and converting them into food-grade liquid CO₂ for industrial use. According to Convertus, the project will set “a new benchmark for sustainable waste management and renewable energy production.”

Strengthening Local Supply Chains
Throughout construction and operations, Convertus plans to prioritize local suppliers, helping to boost York Region’s economy and expanding opportunities for Ontario’s skilled workforce.
Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, called the investment a significant vote of confidence in Ontario’s competitiveness.
“Convertus’ investment serves not only as a vote of confidence in our municipalities, manufacturers, and workers, but in Ontario’s role as a reliable and trusted partner for growth,” Fedeli said in the release.
Caroline Mulroney, MPP for York–Simcoe, said the project brings “cutting-edge technology, new jobs, and long-term environmental benefits” to the community.
Part of Ontario’s Regional Development Strategy
The Regional Development Program, launched in 2019, provides tailored support to manufacturers to improve competitiveness. To date, it has helped secure over $2.3 billion in new investments and more than 4,300 jobs across Ontario.
Through the AMIC stream alone, the province has invested over $49 million in 42 projects, leveraging more than $675 million of private-sector investment.
York Region Chair and CEO Eric Jolliffe noted the facility will process 200,000 tonnes of organic waste annually, generate enough RNG to heat 5,000 homes, and cut emissions by 15,000 tonnes per year.
