Ontario Awards Construction Contract for East Harbour Transit Hub
TORONTO – The Ontario government has awarded the construction contract for the East Harbour Transit Hub, a major new transit project designed to improve access and connectivity for thousands of residents while supporting over 50,000 jobs in the surrounding area. The hub will integrate both GO Transit and the Ontario Line, forming a key part of the province’s efforts to enhance public transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
“The investments we are making in transit and infrastructure are helping fight gridlock and speed up commutes for millions of people across Ontario, including the 100,000 transit users who are expected to use the East Harbour Transit Hub every day,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario’s Minister of Transportation.
Located just east of the Don Valley Parkway and south of Eastern Avenue, the East Harbour Transit Hub is expected to ease congestion at Union Station by diverting approximately 14,000 commuters during rush hour peaks, reducing crowding at the city’s primary transit hub by up to 14 percent.
The project also aligns with federal efforts to build more housing near major transit hubs. Canada’s Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, highlighted the addition of approximately 4,000 residential units to the area, ensuring that new housing developments are well-connected to reliable transit options.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow welcomed the project, emphasizing its impact on commuters and transit efficiency. “People depend on public transit to be fast, reliable and get them where they need to go. Riders will now enjoy a better public transit experience,” said Chow. “The East Harbour Transit Hub will serve 100,000 people per day on the Ontario Line and GO Transit, resulting in less crowding at Union Station.”
The East Harbour Transit Hub will serve the Riverdale, Riverside, and Leslieville communities, providing improved transit access while fostering economic growth and residential development. The project is part of a broader initiative by the Ontario government to enhance transit infrastructure and create more efficient connections for commuters across the GTHA.
