Ontario Investing $7 Million in Agri-Food Research and Innovation Projects

Ontario agri-food research investment supports farming innovation and food security

TORONTO — The Ontario government is investing up to $7 million through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance to support 34 new research projects aimed at strengthening Ontario’s farming, food processing and agri-food technology sectors.

The province says the funding will help researchers and industry partners develop practical, market-ready solutions for farmers and food processors while improving the long-term competitiveness of Ontario’s agri-food industry.

“Today’s investment will help Ontario farmers remain leaders in food production, delivering safe and high-quality local food to our communities and to markets around the world,” said Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness Minister Trevor Jones.

Supporting innovation in Ontario agriculture

The projects are being funded through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, a collaboration between the Ontario government and the University of Guelph.

The latest round of investments includes research focused on:

  • Restoration programs for young Lake Whitefish in partnership with the Saugeen Ojibway Nation
  • Satellite and machine-learning technology to map flooding and wetlands on farmland
  • Prevention and management strategies for pepper crop loss
  • Lower-cost nutrition and production strategies for pig farming

Ontario says the initiative supports its broader strategy to modernize farming operations while improving sustainability, productivity and food security.

University of Guelph partnership

The province noted that Ontario’s agri-food research ecosystem includes:

  • 14 research properties owned by Agricultural Research and Innovation Ontario (ARIO)
  • More than 5,600 acres of research land
  • Over 220 research buildings and facilities across Ontario

University of Guelph President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rene Van Acker said the partnership helps translate research into practical applications for Ontario’s agricultural sector.

“As Canada’s top-ranked university for agriculture and forestry, and veterinary sciences, the University of Guelph is proud to work alongside the province through a collaborative model that advances research and discovery,” Van Acker said.

Long-term investment in food production

The province says the new projects are part of a broader $47.5 million investment over seven years through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance research programming.

Ontario officials say the funding aligns with the province’s Grow Ontario Strategy and proposed Protecting Ontario’s Food Independence Act, 2026, which aims to strengthen domestic food production and support local farmers.

Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security Nolan Quinn said continued investment in homegrown research is critical to keeping Ontario competitive in agriculture and food innovation.

Agriculture remains key economic sector

Ontario’s agri-food sector remains one of the province’s largest economic drivers, supporting farming, food processing, research and export activity across rural and urban communities.

The government says investing in research and innovation will help Ontario farmers adapt to:

  • Climate-related challenges
  • Supply chain pressures
  • Rising production costs
  • Global competition

Officials also say the research projects will help accelerate adoption of new technologies and strengthen resilience throughout Ontario’s food supply chain.
