New York Fries Introduces 100% Compostable Cups, Leading the Way in Sustainable Fast Food

Toronto – In a bid to revolutionize the fast-food industry’s approach to sustainability, New York Fries (NYF) has unveiled its latest initiative: 100% compostable and biodegradable drink cups. This move marks a significant milestone for the renowned French fry brand as it becomes the first national chain in North America to offer such eco-friendly packaging.

Partnering with SOFi Products, NYF has developed a pioneering cup design made entirely from plastic-free and bioplastic-free paper. Unlike conventional fountain drink cups that rely on plastic lids, these new cups feature an innovative four-fold design, incorporating a spill-proof, built-in lid. This not only enhances the user experience but also contributes to NYF’s overarching goal of reducing single-use plastic waste.

Alyssa Berenstein, NYF’s Marketing Director, expressed her excitement about the company’s latest endeavor, emphasizing its alignment with NYF’s longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship. Berenstein noted the overwhelmingly positive response from customers during the cup’s extensive testing phase in British Columbia and Southwestern Ontario.

Following the successful trials, NYF is poised to roll out the compostable cups nationwide across all Canadian stores by May 2024. This initiative builds upon NYF’s previous sustainability efforts, including the elimination of plastic straws in 2018 and the introduction of recyclable and compostable fry and poutine packaging in 2019.

The introduction of the compostable cups is expected to have a significant impact, eliminating an estimated 3.6 million plastic lids from Canadian waste bins annually. Moreover, NYF’s partnership with Tree Canada since 2020 has resulted in the planting and nurturing of thousands of trees across Canadian communities.

In a statement, NYF reiterated its commitment to reducing its ecological footprint and leading by example in the quick-service restaurant industry. The introduction of the compostable cups is just the latest step in NYF’s ongoing journey toward sustainability.
