New Independent Senators Appointed to Strengthen Senate
Ottawa, ON – In a significant move aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and diversity of the Canadian Senate, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today the appointment of Charles Adler and Tracy Muggli as independent senators. The appointments, made by the Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, fill two key vacancies in the upper chamber of Parliament.
Charles Adler will represent Manitoba, while Tracy Muggli will serve as the senator for Saskatchewan. Their selections were made through the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, a process introduced in 2016 to ensure a merit-based and transparent selection of senators who are independent, diverse, and capable of addressing the broad challenges facing the nation.
Charles Adler, a renowned figure in Canadian media, has had a distinguished career as a radio host and journalist. Emigrating from Hungary at a young age, Adler became an influential voice in Canada, known for his advocacy of human rights and democratic values. His contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
Tracy Muggli brings extensive experience from the health and social services sectors. With a career spanning over 35 years, Muggli is currently the Executive Director of St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Her dedication to community service has earned her several honors, including the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal and the Premier’s Award for Excellence in Public Service.
Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized the significance of these appointments in a statement, saying, “The Senate of Canada will be stronger with its newest independent senators. Mr. Adler and Ms. Muggli will put their vast experience and knowledge to work for all Canadians in their new roles.”
The appointments reflect a continued effort to reform the Senate by ensuring its members are chosen based on merit and are representative of Canada’s diverse population. As independent senators, Adler and Muggli are expected to bring valuable perspectives and expertise to the Senate’s deliberations and legislative processes.
