National Pet Day Highlights Emotional Bond Between Kids and Animals, LEGO Study Finds

National Pet Day LEGO study reveals strong emotional bonds between kids and animals

As National Pet Day approaches on April 11, new insights from The LEGO Group highlight the growing emotional connection between children and animals — both real and imagined.

According to findings from LEGO’s She Built That study, nearly 4 in 10 girls in Canada (37.5%) say they confide in their pets about things that matter, placing pets ahead of siblings (29%) and teachers (16%) as trusted companions.

The data points to a broader trend in how children form emotional connections and navigate personal experiences.

Pets as Emotional Support

The study suggests that pets play a significant role in helping children process emotions and build confidence.

For many young people, animals offer a consistent and non-judgmental presence — something that can be especially important during formative years.

Interestingly, the connection extends beyond real-life pets. The study found that 28% of girls say they talk to their favourite toy animals when working through meaningful thoughts or situations.

This overlap between real and imaginative companionship highlights the role of play in emotional development.

Play, Creativity and Storytelling

Experts and educators have long noted that creative play supports emotional expression, allowing children to explore ideas, solve problems and build resilience.

LEGO’s research reinforces this, showing how animal-themed toys can serve as tools for storytelling and self-reflection.

The company has curated a range of animal-inspired LEGO sets designed to encourage both imaginative play and hands-on building experiences.

These sets range from entry-level builds for younger children to more complex models intended for older builders and collectors.

A Broader View of National Pet Day

National Pet Day traditionally celebrates the role of animals in daily life, from companionship and routine to emotional support.

The LEGO study suggests that these relationships are evolving, with children forming meaningful connections not only with pets but also through imaginative play.

Whether it’s caring for a pet at home or building animal-inspired creations, the underlying theme remains consistent — connection, comfort and creativity.

As families mark National Pet Day this year, the findings offer a reminder that the bond between children and animals can take many forms, each playing a role in emotional growth and well-being.
