MiWay Promotes Transit Savings as GTA Gas Prices Continue to Climb
MiWay transit savings help commuters reduce transportation costs amid rising fuel prices
MISSISSAUGA — As gas prices across the Greater Toronto Area continue to fluctuate above $1.60 per litre, the City of Mississauga is encouraging residents to consider public transit as a more affordable and predictable transportation option.
MiWay, Mississauga’s public transit system, says rising fuel costs are making everyday commuting increasingly expensive for drivers, while transit fares remain fixed and predictable throughout the year.
According to information released by the City, filling a compact sedan’s fuel tank weekly can now cost between $80 and $88, adding up to at least $320 per month. In comparison, an adult MiWay PRESTO monthly pass costs $145 and includes unlimited rides throughout the month.
Transit Costs Lower Than Regular Fuel Expenses
City officials say the financial difference becomes even greater when broader vehicle ownership expenses are considered.
Recent studies cited by the City estimate the average annual cost of owning a vehicle can exceed $16,000 once fuel, insurance, maintenance, parking and vehicle payments are factored in.
MiWay officials say transit can help residents reduce transportation costs while avoiding the unpredictability of changing gas prices.
“At $145 for unlimited rides, a monthly MiWay PRESTO pass costs less than the price of filling the average gas tank twice,” the City noted in its transit advisory.
Give your wallet a break from high gas prices. Instead of filling your tank, relax and ride with MiWay. Consider getting a monthly PRESTO bus pass to get unlimited rides all month long. https://t.co/6JjSm7Kyt8@MiWayHelps pic.twitter.com/SpLBaV0hyH

MiWay Expands Accessibility and Affordability
MiWay continues to offer several fare options for riders across different age groups and income levels.
Current PRESTO fares include:
- Children ages 6–12: Free
- Youth ages 13–19: $2.90 per ride
- Adults: $3.50 per ride
- Seniors 65+: Free
Cash fares remain $4.50 per ride.
The City also highlighted its income-based fare discount program through Peel Region, which allows eligible riders to receive 50 per cent discounts on PRESTO monthly passes and single fares.
Officials say these programs are intended to make transit more accessible while helping residents manage rising living costs.
Transit Connections Across the GTA
MiWay riders can also connect seamlessly to other transit systems across the region using PRESTO, including GO Transit and the TTC.
The City says riders heading into Toronto can use MiWay routes to access Kipling Bus Terminal, where free transfers within PRESTO transfer windows help reduce commuting costs even further.
PRESTO users can also take advantage of “PRESTO Perks,” which offer discounts at attractions, entertainment venues and restaurants throughout the GTA.
Encouraging Transit Use During the Summer Season
With warmer weather approaching and summer events returning across Mississauga, the City says MiWay offers a convenient way for residents to access festivals, recreation programs, shopping areas and waterfront destinations without worrying about parking or fuel expenses.
Many MiWay routes operate every 15 minutes or better, helping support reliable service across the city.
The City is encouraging residents to plan routes and explore fare options through the MiWay website.
