Mississauga’s Pickleball Craze: A Sport That’s Winning Hearts and Courts

Mississauga  — As summer heats up, so does the excitement for pickleball in Mississauga. This sport, which combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, is fast becoming a local favorite, attracting players of all ages and skill levels.

Pickleball’s surge in popularity is more than just a trend; it’s a testament to its appeal as a fun, accessible, and low-impact sport. Kristina Zietsma, Director of Recreation and Culture, shared her enthusiasm: “Pickleball’s popularity in Mississauga continues to grow, and we’re excited about the opportunities it brings. The sport has captured the hearts of our community, and as a city, we’re committed to supporting its growth.”

The game, which can be played both indoors and outdoors, involves using a paddle to hit a perforated ball over a net on a court similar in size to a doubles badminton court. It can be enjoyed leisurely or with a competitive edge, making it a versatile choice for family fun or serious play.

Expanding Facilities

Mississauga currently offers 84 outdoor pickleball courts across various city parks, including 58 shared with tennis, 18 club courts, and eight dedicated pickleball courts. Indoor pickleball is available at ten local community centers, featuring drop-in sessions and classes for all skill levels.

The city is also focused on expanding its pickleball facilities. Over the next two years, Mississauga plans to add seven new outdoor pickleball locations and construct nine new shared and eleven dedicated pickleball courts. A site for tournament play is also under review.

A Sport for All

Pickleball is gaining traction not only for its physical benefits but also for its social and mental health advantages. It’s particularly beneficial for older adults, offering a low-impact way to stay active and engage with others. The game’s easy learning curve and engaging nature make it a great way to reduce stress and boost mood.

The City’s new pickleball webpage, available at mississauga.ca/pickleball, provides comprehensive information on court locations, available times, and upcoming programs. The site aims to make it easier for residents to find the perfect pickleball experience.

As the sport continues to grow in popularity, Mississauga is committed to supporting and enhancing its pickleball community. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the game, now is the perfect time to grab a paddle and experience the fun and benefits of pickleball.
