Mississauga Awards Waste Collection Contract to Emterra Environmental Ahead of 2027 Transition

Mississauga waste collection services will move to a new five-day schedule under Emterra Environmental beginning in 2027

MISSISSAUGA — The City of Mississauga has awarded its future residential waste collection contract to Emterra Environmental as the municipality prepares to officially take over local waste collection services from the Region of Peel in 2027.

Beginning October 1, 2027, Emterra Environmental will manage residential garbage, organics and yard waste collection across the city, along with waste services for multi-residential buildings.

The contract marks a major milestone in Mississauga’s transition toward independently managed municipal waste collection services.

Mayor Carolyn Parrish said the agreement is intended to support reliable and environmentally responsible waste collection for residents.

“Awarding the waste collection contract marks a major milestone as the City prepares to take responsibility for local waste collection services,” Parrish said in a statement. “This contract supports our goal of delivering reliable, efficient and environmentally responsible services while ensuring residents continue to receive high-quality waste collection.”

What Will Change in 2027

Under the new contract, Emterra Environmental will provide:

  • Five-day-a-week residential waste collection schedules from Monday to Friday
  • Bi-weekly yard waste pickup throughout the full season from mid-March to mid-December
  • Garbage collection services for multi-residential buildings
  • Recycling collection at select locations not serviced by Circular Materials

The City says residential recycling collection for most households will continue to be handled separately by Circular Materials, which assumed responsibility for recycling services earlier this year on January 1, 2026.

Community recycling centres will continue to operate under the Region of Peel.

Focus on Efficiency and Environmental Impact

Mississauga officials say moving from a four-day collection schedule to a five-day system is expected to improve route efficiency, reduce late pickups and create more balanced service schedules across the city.

The City also says the standardized bi-weekly yard waste program will help reduce the number of collection trucks operating on roads while creating more predictable pickup schedules for residents.

Geoff Wright, Mississauga’s City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer, said the transition process will now move into operational planning.

“This waste collection service model was designed to maintain dependable, resident-focused waste collection, while improving operational efficiency and lowering environmental impact,” Wright said.

He added that City staff will continue working with Emterra Environmental, the Region of Peel and Circular Materials to coordinate routes and prepare for a seamless transition ahead of the October 2027 launch.

Residents Will Receive New Collection Information Later

City staff will now begin planning collection routes and determining future pickup schedules for garbage and organics collection.

Mississauga says residents will receive updated collection day information before the new system officially begins in 2027.

The City describes the contract as part of its broader effort to modernize local services while maintaining environmental sustainability and operational efficiency as municipal responsibilities evolve.
