Mississauga Approves New Waste Collection Service Levels Ahead of 2027 Transition

Mississauga waste collection changes 2027 to include new pickup schedules and services

Mississauga City Council has approved new waste collection service levels that will take effect on October 1, 2027, as the City prepares to assume responsibility for local waste services from the Region of Peel.

The move marks a significant shift in how waste is managed in Mississauga, with the City taking over collection of garbage, organics and yard waste, while maintaining coordination with existing partners for recycling and community facilities.

City to Take Over Waste Collection in 2027

Currently, waste collection in Mississauga is handled by the Region of Peel. Under the new plan, the City will take over these services directly through newly approved contracts, with the goal of improving efficiency and reliability.

Recycling collection will continue to be managed by Circular Materials, which began servicing eligible locations in January 2026. Meanwhile, Peel Region will continue operating community recycling centres.

Key Changes to Service Levels

Under the new system, residents can expect several changes:

  • A shift to a five-day-a-week residential collection schedule (Monday to Friday), up from the current four-day system
  • Continued waste collection services for multi-residential buildings
  • A simplified bi-weekly yard waste collection schedule for the entire season (mid-March to mid-December)
  • City-managed recycling collection for approximately 1,000 locations not serviced by Circular Materials, including municipal buildings and some small businesses

City officials say the changes are designed to streamline operations and reduce complexity for residents.

Focus on Efficiency and Reliability

The transition to a five-day collection schedule is expected to create more balanced routes, helping reduce delays and late pickups.

Similarly, standardizing yard waste collection to a consistent bi-weekly schedule eliminates seasonal shifts between weekly and bi-weekly service, making it easier for residents to follow.

The City also notes that reducing the number of collection trucks required for yard waste will help lower environmental impacts.

Recycling Coverage Expanded

As part of the new system, Mississauga will take over recycling collection for locations that are not eligible under Circular Materials’ program. These include certain public facilities, places of worship and small businesses that previously needed to arrange private collection services.

Transition Planning Underway

Residents may see changes to their collection days once the new system is implemented. The City says it will provide advance notice ahead of the October 2027 rollout.

Mayor Carolyn Parrish said the new contracts represent a key milestone in preparing for the transition.

“Mississauga is committed to delivering efficient, reliable waste collection services. These new contracts uphold that commitment,” Parrish said in a statement.

City Manager Geoff Wright added that bringing waste services under municipal oversight will support a more streamlined and sustainable system, with continued coordination between the City, Peel Region and Circular Materials.

Looking Ahead

The transition comes as Mississauga continues to grow and evolve its municipal services. By taking direct control of waste collection, the City aims to better align service delivery with local needs while maintaining affordability and environmental responsibility.
