Mississauga Launches Urban Design Review to Help Shape Future Growth

The Mississauga Urban Design Program review will gather public input on housing, neighbourhoods, parks and public spaces.

MISSISSAUGA — The City of Mississauga is asking residents, industry professionals and community stakeholders to help shape the future of urban development through a comprehensive review of its Urban Design Program.

The initiative aims to ensure Mississauga’s urban design policies continue to meet the needs of a rapidly growing city while supporting housing development, affordability and the creation of vibrant, people-focused communities.

City officials say the review is part of broader efforts to balance growth with quality design as Mississauga plans for future development under its new Official Plan 2051 and recommendations from the Mayor’s Housing Task Force.

How Urban Design Shapes Daily Life

Urban design influences many aspects of everyday life, from the buildings people live in and the streets they travel to the parks, public spaces and gathering places they enjoy.

Whether residents are walking through a neighbourhood, visiting a local park or attending a community event, urban design helps determine how welcoming, accessible and functional those spaces are.

Mississauga currently uses a variety of urban design guidelines to guide development across the city. Through the review process, the City is examining how those policies can be updated to better reflect current needs and future growth.

Public Input Sought Through Online Engagement

As part of the first phase of the review, the City has launched a virtual engagement process that allows residents to participate online at their convenience.

Participants are encouraged to visit the project website, watch an educational video about urban design and complete a survey about their experiences and priorities.

The City is asking residents to consider questions such as:

  • What are your favourite places in Mississauga and why?
  • What makes a well-designed neighbourhood, building or public space?
  • How does urban design affect your daily life?

Officials say public feedback will help guide future policies and ensure new development integrates effectively into existing communities.

Supporting Housing and Complete Communities

The Urban Design Program review is also intended to support Mississauga’s housing objectives.

As the city works to increase housing supply and improve affordability, officials say strong urban design standards remain critical to creating complete communities that combine homes, employment opportunities, parks, cultural amenities and transportation options.

The review will examine how design guidelines can support new housing while maintaining attractive, functional and sustainable neighbourhoods.

Participation Details

Residents can participate in the online consultation from June 22 through July 31, 2026.

The engagement is available 24 hours a day through the City’s project website at mississauga.ca/urbandesign.

The consultation is open to:

  • Mississauga residents
  • Industry professionals
  • Students
  • Anyone interested in urban design and city-building

Looking Ahead

City officials say the Urban Design Program review represents an opportunity to modernize design policies and ensure Mississauga remains a desirable place to live, work, play and invest.

The review will help guide how future neighbourhoods, public spaces and development projects contribute to the city’s long-term vision as one of Canada’s fastest-growing urban centres.

Residents are encouraged to share their perspectives and help shape the next generation of Mississauga’s built environment.
