Mississauga Updates Climate Plan to Tackle Growing Threats of Extreme Weather

Mississauga, ON — This past year, Mississauga has felt the intensifying impacts of climate change through increasingly extreme weather events, from relentless rainfall to record-breaking heatwaves. In response, the City is revisiting its Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) five years after its initial approval, aiming to enhance its strategies and better equip the city for the future.

To support the process, Mississauga has launched “Mississauga’s Climate Lab,” an interactive platform designed to engage residents and provide insights into the City’s ongoing climate initiatives. The platform invites residents to learn about the planned updates and offer feedback on climate priorities, open through December 20, 2024.

The CCAP, originally set out in 2019, serves as a ten-year roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and mitigating local climate impacts. Recognizing the need for accelerated action, the City is now proposing more ambitious GHG reduction targets aligned with international climate goals, including limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This update aims to refine and expand the City’s climate initiatives, keeping pace with scientific advancements and growing public urgency.

The Climate Lab, located on the “Your Say Mississauga” platform, includes resources for residents to deepen their understanding of climate issues and provides a forum for community input on the revised climate goals and strategies. The updated CCAP will emphasize resilience against climate risks, setting more rigorous targets to curb emissions and focusing on both immediate and long-term sustainability actions.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in shaping Mississauga’s climate future by sharing their feedback. Full details of the Climate Change Action Plan update are available at yoursay.mississauga.ca/climate-change.

GTA Today will continue to follow developments around Mississauga’s climate initiatives as the City works to solidify its climate response and engage the community in shaping a sustainable future.
