Mississauga Ramps Up Efforts to Combat Impaired Driving This Holiday Season

MISSISSAUGA, ON — With the holiday season in full swing, the City of Mississauga and Peel Regional Police are joining forces to tackle impaired driving, a persistent issue on local roads. This year, the campaign emphasizes staying sober or finding a safe alternative to ensure everyone gets home safely.

From January 1 to November 30, 2024, Mississauga saw 89 road collisions involving impaired drivers. Peel Regional Police’s Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) program is in full effect, with increased enforcement and additional officers deployed throughout the holidays. To date, more than 4,600 vehicles have been checked, and the initiative will continue into early January.

Driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs poses severe risks to all road users. Impaired drivers face a range of penalties, including license suspension, vehicle impoundment, hefty fines, and mandatory education or treatment programs. The severity of these penalties depends on factors such as age, license type, and previous convictions.

A Stark Warning for Drivers
Impaired driving can have life-altering consequences. Even minimal consumption of alcohol or drugs can impair reaction times, decision-making abilities, motor skills, and overall coordination. This not only endangers the driver but also passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists.

Peel Regional Police urge residents to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.

Plan Ahead to Stay Safe
To help reduce incidents of impaired driving, Mississauga encourages residents to plan ahead:

  • Designate a sober driver.
  • Use MiWay transit or opt for rideshare programs or taxis.
  • Stay alert while walking, cycling, or taking transit, especially when crossing intersections. Always use crosswalks or crossrides when possible.
