Mississauga Pushes Provincial Priorities at 2025 AMO Conference
City seeks fair funding, transit investment, and housing support in Ottawa meetings
OTTAWA — Mississauga officials pressed their case for stronger provincial support this week at the 2025 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference, with Deputy Mayor Matt Mahoney leading a delegation of councillors and senior staff to Ottawa.
Over four days, the group held meetings with cabinet ministers, opposition leaders, MPPs, and industry stakeholders, highlighting the city’s most pressing issues—from policing costs to flood mitigation and transit expansion.
Who Attended
The delegation included Deputy Mayor and Ward 8 Councillor Matt Mahoney, Councillors Alvin Tedjo (Ward 2), Chris Fonseca (Ward 3), Natalie Hart (Ward 5), Joe Horneck (Ward 6), and Brad Butt (Ward 11). City Manager and CAO Geoff Wright also took part, along with senior staff.
Key Priorities
Mississauga’s representatives outlined several priorities to provincial leaders, including:
-
Fixing Peel Regional Police funding — calling for an end to the $93 million annual subsidy of Brampton.
-
Securing a new financial deal — similar to Toronto and Ottawa’s, to support transit operations and major capital projects.
-
Boosting housing affordability — seeking provincial help to offset waived development charges and accelerate construction.
-
Transit investment — pushing for the Hazel McCallion Line LRT Downtown Loop and all-day, two-way GO service on the Milton line.
-
Flooding and stormwater management — requesting more infrastructure funding for flood-prone areas.
-
Economic protection — working with the province to counter U.S. tariffs and safeguard local jobs.
-
Court resources — advocating for more justices of the peace to ease Provincial Offences Act court delays.
-
Airport tax fairness — pushing to fix the Greater Toronto Airport Authority’s Payment in Lieu of Taxes formula.
Provincial Engagement
The delegation met with officials from the Solicitor General, Attorney General, and the Ministries of Economic Development, Infrastructure, Transportation, Environment, Finance, and Municipal Affairs and Housing. They also engaged with Ontario NDP, Liberal, and Green Party leaders.
City’s Message
“Team Mississauga took every opportunity at the AMO Conference to participate in meaningful discussions with the province about our top priorities and to advocate for our City and our residents,” said Deputy Mayor Mahoney. “We successfully delivered our messages and are looking forward to seeing the positive outcomes of our discussions at AMO.”
