Mayor Carolyn Parrish Presents Key to the City in Memory of Lloyd Stockley

Mississauga honours minor hockey leader with city’s highest recognition

Mississauga, ON — The City of Mississauga has posthumously awarded its most prestigious honour, the Key to the City, to Lloyd Stockley, a pillar of minor hockey whose leadership spanned more than four decades.

Mayor Carolyn Parrish and Ward 1 Councillor Stephen Dasko presented the symbolic award to Stockley’s daughter, Heather Stockley, at today’s City Council meeting. The recognition commemorates Stockley’s lifelong dedication to youth sports, particularly hockey, where he was affectionately known as “the Governor.”

A Lifetime in Hockey

Stockley’s contributions to the sport are deeply rooted in Mississauga’s community identity. He was the founder and president of the Mississauga Jets AA minor hockey association within the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) and Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL). He also established and owned the Mississauga Chargers Junior A team, part of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), which he ran for more than 30 years until his passing in November 2023.

Throughout his career, Stockley earned numerous accolades, including the George Chamandy Memorial Trophy in 1987—considered the GTHL’s highest honour for service to the game—and the Crystal Puck Award from the OHA in 2017. That same year, he was also inducted into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame.

Today, his daughter Heather continues his legacy as the owner and “Governess” of the Mississauga Chargers.

City Leaders Pay Tribute

Mayor Carolyn Parrish highlighted the enduring influence of Stockley’s work:

“It is an honour for me to present the Key to the City to Heather Stockley. The impact her father Lloyd had on sport and recreation in our city is immeasurable. For more than four decades, Lloyd was a guiding light for minor hockey in Mississauga. His years of leadership on and off the ice, and his passion for enriching young lives with athletic accomplishment is a legacy that will endure.”

Councillor Stephen Dasko echoed the sentiment:

“I am delighted and honoured to recognize Lloyd Stockley city-wide for his outstanding role and integral part in youth sports over the past 70+ years. The impact on the development of minor hockey through the Jets and the Chargers is significant. His dedication to hockey in Mississauga has been outstanding and greatly appreciated by so many, a true legacy.”
