Mississauga Library Offers Key Services to Help Newcomers Settle in Canada

MISSISSAUGA – Starting a new life in Canada can feel overwhelming, but local libraries like Mississauga Library are stepping up to help newcomers adjust, connect, and succeed in their new home.

From citizenship preparation to job hunting resources, Mississauga Library branches are providing a wide range of free programs and services designed specifically for immigrants and newcomers, transforming the library into a one-stop community hub for essential settlement supports.

📚 Citizenship Resources and Legal Support

Newcomers can access the official Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship guide through the library, as well as practice tests to prepare for the citizenship exam.

Additionally, settlement workers and Commissioners of Oaths are available to assist with legal documents, language training referrals, and information on healthcare, housing, and other services. Organizations like Immigration Peel also partner with the library to connect residents to additional local supports.

🗣️ Improving English and Building Connections

The library offers English conversation and reading circles, creating an informal, friendly space where newcomers can practice their language skills, make new friends, and engage with the community.

💼 Job Hunting and Career Support

Mississauga Library’s Job Hunting Resources program, in partnership with Catholic Cross-cultural Services, provides hands-on assistance for newcomers entering the Canadian job market. Services include:

  • Help with resumes and cover letters

  • Research assistance for local job opportunities

  • Monthly one-on-one interview coaching sessions with career specialists, offering feedback and confidence-building tips

Attendees are encouraged to dress for success and bring copies of their resumes for these interactive sessions.

🏛️ Onsite Service Canada Support

Select library locations also host Service Canada representatives, who provide support with CPP, OAS, and employment benefits applications, helping newcomers navigate essential government services. Visitors should bring photo ID and original documents when accessing these services.

🏢 Libraries as Community Hubs

Mississauga Library is proving that modern libraries are more than places to borrow books—they are vibrant community centres where newcomers can find information, support, and belonging.
