Mississauga Launches ‘Mississauga Matters’ Campaign Ahead of Federal Election

MISSISSAUGA – With the federal election officially set for Monday, April 28, 2025, the City of Mississauga has launched a renewed advocacy push through its Mississauga Matters campaign, spotlighting urgent local priorities like housing, affordability, and economic resilience.

As Canada’s seventh-largest city, Mississauga is leveraging this campaign to ensure its voice is heard by federal candidates and major political parties in the weeks leading up to election day. The campaign zeroes in on three core pillars: getting housing built, keeping Mississauga affordable, and addressing the impact of American tariffs on the city’s economy.

Building Housing and Infrastructure

The campaign emphasizes the need for housing-enabling infrastructure, with a focus on expanding all-day, two-way GO service along the Milton Corridor, which is projected to serve up to 94,000 passengers by 2041. Mississauga is also advocating for the construction of a new transit facility to support sustainable public transit growth and critical investments in disaster mitigation to protect vulnerable communities.

Affordability and Housing Supply

Tackling affordability head-on, Mississauga continues to build on its 2023 Housing Action Plan and the more recent Mayor’s Housing Task Force launched in July 2024. Informed by over 30 experts from Ontario’s private and non-profit sectors, the city is calling for federal support to implement actionable solutions related to zoning, development charges, building standards, and affordable housing funding.

The city is also treating the growing issue of food insecurity as a provincial and national emergency, calling for broader government intervention to help residents struggling with the rising cost of living.

Responding to Economic Pressures

Mississauga is sounding the alarm on the effects of American trade tariffs and their potential fallout for local industries. The campaign urges federal leaders to work with provinces and municipalities to protect Canadian businesses and stabilize the economy during this uncertain time.

Call to Action

Residents are encouraged to get involved by engaging with the campaign online and speaking with their local candidates using the hashtag #MississaugaMatters. The initiative will continue throughout the federal election period to keep local issues front and centre in political discussions.

“Municipalities, like Mississauga, are central to Canada’s success,” said Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish in a statement released by the city. “By working together with the Canadian government, Council’s goal is to move Mississauga forward and strengthen investments in transit, housing, infrastructure and climate resilience.”
