Mississauga Introduces New Flood Mitigation Initiatives Following Summer’s Severe Weather
Mississauga, ON — In response to this summer’s record-breaking and destructive floods, the City of Mississauga is launching three comprehensive programs designed to help residents address flood damage and implement preventative measures. These initiatives come after extreme weather events on July 16 and August 17-18, which left many households dealing with flooded basements and stormwater-related destruction.
Financial Relief for Affected Residents
Starting this December, Mississauga residents impacted by summer flooding will have access to a Residential Compassionate Flood Relief Grant, which provides a one-time payment of $1,000 to eligible property owners and tenants. This grant aims to alleviate the immediate financial strain of flood damage.

To further bolster flood prevention efforts, the city will also debut two rebate programs in early 2025:
- Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate Program: Homeowners can receive up to $6,800 to cover the costs of eligible flood prevention upgrades.
- Flood Resilience Rebate Program: This initiative offers reimbursement of 50% of the expenses, up to $3,000, for flood-resilient home improvements.
Commitment to Infrastructure Upgrades
Mississauga has committed to fast-tracking significant stormwater infrastructure projects. The Dixie-Dundas Flood Mitigation Project and various storm sewer upgrades are among the critical works being accelerated. Over the next decade, the city plans to invest $308 million into its Stormwater Capital Plan, ensuring a proactive approach to safeguarding the community against future flooding.
In parallel, the city is actively seeking provincial and federal funding to support these expansive projects, strengthening Mississauga’s ability to withstand extreme weather events.
Public Information Session at Living Arts Centre
Residents can learn more about these programs at an upcoming information session on Wednesday, November 13, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Living Arts Centre. The event will feature presentations by City staff, Mayor Bonnie Crombie, and experts from organizations such as the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Credit Valley Conservation, and Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services.
The session will detail the city’s response to increased flooding and offer practical advice on how homeowners can protect their properties from water damage. Attendees will also have the opportunity to engage with experts and ask questions about flood risk reduction.
Home Flood Prevention Tips
Mississauga residents are encouraged to be proactive in minimizing flood risks. Key steps include:
- Maintaining gutters and downspouts: Ensure these systems are clean and directing water away from your foundation.
- Proper grading: Verify that the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation to prevent water pooling.
- Sump pump upkeep: Regularly check your sump pump and discharge pipes to confirm they are functioning correctly.
The city also recommends consulting professionals for measures such as installing backwater valves, which help prevent sewage from backing up into homes.
Addressing Long-Term Flood Risks
Flooding can lead to costly water damage, requiring urgent and comprehensive repairs. To minimize impact, it is vital to act quickly, use protective gear when assessing damage, and document losses for insurance purposes.
Residents with questions about flood insurance coverage should consult their insurance providers to ensure they have adequate protection.
