Mississauga Marks International Women’s Day 2026 with Month-Long Programs and Community Events
International Women’s Day 2026 Mississauga features month-long programs and community events
The City of Mississauga is inviting residents to connect, learn and give back as it marks International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 on March 8, joining communities worldwide in celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
This year’s global theme, “Give To Gain,” emphasizes the power of generosity, mentorship, advocacy and collaboration in creating greater opportunities for women and girls. City officials say the theme aligns closely with Mississauga’s broader commitment to equity and inclusion.
A Citywide Celebration on March 8 and Beyond
Mississauga will host a range of programs and activities on March 8 and throughout the month of March. Residents are encouraged to visit the City’s International Women’s Day webpage for a full schedule of events and opportunities.
Planned activities include:
-
Film screenings and storytelling events highlighting women’s leadership and lived experiences
-
Sports and recreation programs celebrating women and girls
-
Visual presentations recognizing notable women from Mississauga’s history
-
Free fitness and aquafitness classes led by women instructors
-
Library programs focused on empowerment, creativity and family learning
-
A curated playlist featuring empowering female artists at City facilities and programs
To mark the occasion on March 8, the City will also light the Mississauga clock tower in purple — a colour widely associated with International Women’s Day and gender equality.
Equity and Inclusion at the Core
As one of Canada’s most diverse municipalities, Mississauga has embedded gender equity within its broader policy framework. The City’s Empowering Change: A Comprehensive Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy: 2026–2031 outlines actions designed to advance belonging, opportunity and representation across municipal programs and partnerships.
Mayor Carolyn Parrish said International Women’s Day serves as both a celebration and a call to action.
“International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder that when we give our time, our voices, and our support, we all gain,” said Mayor Parrish. “In Mississauga, we are proud to celebrate the achievements of women by creating opportunities to connect, learn, and give back through programs that uplift women and girls, and honour their leadership. By leading through example and working together, we can continue to build a city where every woman feels supported, valued, and empowered to succeed.”
Global Context, Local Impact
International Women’s Day is observed annually around the world as a day to recognize achievements and highlight the ongoing work required to achieve gender equality. In Mississauga, the month-long programming reflects both global solidarity and local commitment.
City officials encourage residents of all ages to participate in events, support women-led initiatives and explore opportunities to mentor, advocate and contribute within their communities.
