Mississauga Fire Offers Essential Safety Tips for the Holiday Season

MISSISSAUGA – With the holiday season in full swing, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) is encouraging residents to take steps to ensure safety while celebrating at home. From festive dinners to cozy evenings by the fire, MFES has shared practical advice to help families avoid accidents during this busy time of year.

Stay Safe in the Kitchen

Cooking is a central part of holiday celebrations, but it can also pose risks if proper precautions aren’t taken. MFES advises residents to stay in the kitchen while preparing meals and avoid distractions. They emphasize the importance of not cooking when fatigued or under the influence of alcohol, suggesting takeout as a safer option in such cases.

The department also urges vigilance when using small appliances like air fryers, toasters, and slow cookers, which can overheat if left on too long. Reading appliance manuals for cleaning and safety instructions is also recommended.

Mind the Heat

Portable heaters, fireplaces, and candles are common during the winter months, but they can become fire hazards if not used properly. MFES reminds residents to keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heat sources and to ensure these items are kept out of reach of children and pets.

If heating equipment appears faulty or hasn’t been serviced recently, MFES encourages residents to contact licensed professionals for inspections and repairs. Annual maintenance of heating equipment and chimneys is an essential safety measure.

Decorate with Caution

Holiday decorations bring festive cheer, but they can also be a source of danger if safety is overlooked. MFES recommends inspecting electrical cords and plugs to ensure they are not frayed or damaged. Overloading outlets or placing cords under rugs should also be avoided, as these practices can lead to overheating and fires.

For those with real trees, MFES stresses the importance of keeping them well-watered to prevent them from drying out, which increases fire risk. Trees should also be positioned away from fireplaces, heaters, and exits.

Test Alarms and Plan Ahead

Ahead of holiday gatherings, MFES highlights the importance of ensuring all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly. Alarms that are more than 10 years old should be replaced. Homes are required to have working smoke alarms on every level and outside all sleeping areas, as well as carbon monoxide alarms.

Residents are encouraged to remind guests of their home’s escape plan, including a designated meeting place outside.

By following these precautions, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services aims to ensure that all residents have a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
