Alongside expressing gratitude for the invaluable work of 911 dispatchers, MFES is providing essential tips to help navigate emergency situations effectively.

“911 – what’s your emergency?” This simple yet critical question is the initial point of contact for individuals facing emergencies, serving as the gateway for first responders such as police, paramedics, and fire services. While firefighters are on the front lines saving lives, 911 dispatchers are the unseen heroes, providing calm guidance and empathy during distressing situations.

With the understanding that emergencies can happen unexpectedly, MFES is offering practical advice for residents:

  1. Dial 911 for Fire Emergencies: If a home or building is on fire or if you detect smoke, immediately dial 911 and ensure your safety by moving to a secure location.
  2. Stay Calm and Provide Clear Information: It’s crucial to remain composed and answer questions from dispatchers as clearly as possible. Their guidance is tailored to handle challenging situations effectively.
  3. Provide Your Exact Location: Especially when calling from a cell phone, informing dispatchers of your precise location is paramount. Utilize tools like compasses or apps such as What3Words to pinpoint your coordinates, particularly in remote areas.
  4. Stay on the Line: Even if you cannot provide additional information verbally, do not hang up. Dispatchers may request further details or instructions, and staying connected ensures a seamless response.
  5. Use Alternative Numbers for Non-Emergencies: Reserve 911 for genuine emergencies. For municipal concerns, general health inquiries, or community-based services, utilize numbers such as 311, 811, and 211 respectively.
