Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services Launches Next Generation 911

MISSISSAUGA – Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) has officially launched Next Generation 911 (NG-911), bringing a major upgrade to emergency communication services. The transition to NG-911 replaces the aging analog infrastructure and is designed to enhance public safety by improving how emergency calls are received and handled.

The NG-911 system is being implemented across the province, including at the Joint Fire Communications Centre located at the Sir Robert Peel Centre, which serves Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. This modernization allows for better communication between 911 dispatchers and callers, ensuring faster and more effective emergency response.

Key benefits of NG-911 include more accurate location tracking, reduced wait times, increased reliability, and improved backup capabilities in the event of a system failure. Future phases of the rollout will enable dispatchers to receive texts, videos, and photos from the public, further enhancing emergency response capabilities.

Mandated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), all municipalities and their Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) must transition to NG-911 by March 31, 2027. MFES has successfully implemented the system two years ahead of schedule, marking a significant milestone in emergency service improvements.

The transition to NG-911 is partially funded by the Ontario government, which has allocated $208 million over three years to support emergency services dispatch centres across the province. The fire services for Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon received $5.2 million to implement the new system.

MFES joins other emergency responders in Peel Region, including Peel Regional Police, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services, and Caledon Fire and Emergency Services, in adopting NG-911 technology. The upgraded system represents a leap forward in public safety, ensuring that emergency responders can communicate more efficiently and effectively with those in need.

As NG-911 continues to roll out across Canada, residents can expect a more reliable and responsive 911 service, reinforcing the commitment to community safety in Mississauga and beyond.
