Mississauga Earns Four Financial Reporting Awards for Budget Transparency and Accountability

Mississauga financial reporting awards from the GFOA and Ontario recognize the City’s leadership in budgeting, financial transparency and accountability.

MISSISSAUGA — The City of Mississauga has received four major financial reporting awards, recognizing its commitment to transparent budgeting, responsible fiscal management and clear public reporting.

The honours include three awards from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada and, for the first time, a Financial Information Return (FIR) Award from Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH).

City officials say the awards reflect Mississauga’s long-standing focus on accountability and making financial information accessible to residents, businesses and stakeholders.

Four Awards Recognize Financial Excellence

Mississauga received the following honours:

  • Distinguished Budget Presentation Award
  • Canadian Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting
  • Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award
  • Financial Information Return (FIR) Award from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing

Together, the awards recognize the City’s budgeting practices, financial reporting, transparency and timely submission of financial information.

38 Consecutive Years of Budget Recognition

The City received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2026–2029 Business Plan & 2026 Budget, marking the 38th consecutive year Mississauga has earned the honour.

The GFOA presents the award to governments that produce budgets serving as effective:

  • Financial plans
  • Policy documents
  • Operational guides
  • Public communication tools

The award recognizes budgets that are comprehensive, understandable and useful for decision-making.

Financial Reporting Recognized for 28th Straight Year

Mississauga also received the Canadian Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its 2024 Financial and Sustainability Report.

This marks the 28th consecutive year the City has received the award.

To qualify, municipalities must produce financial reports that exceed the reporting requirements established under CPA Canada’s Public Sector Accounting Standards while presenting financial information in a clear and accessible manner.

Making Financial Information Easier to Understand

The City’s 2024 Financial Report Highlights earned the Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award for the ninth consecutive year.

The publication summarizes the City’s annual financial performance in a shorter, more reader-friendly format designed for residents and businesses.

Judges evaluate reports based on:

  • Readability
  • Accessibility
  • Presentation
  • Creativity
  • Public usefulness

First-Time Provincial Recognition

For the first time, Mississauga also received the Financial Information Return Award from Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

The award recognizes municipalities that submit accurate and timely Financial Information Returns (FIR), which provide standardized financial and statistical information to the Province.

The Ministry works with Ontario’s 444 municipalities to support municipal financial oversight and planning.

Supporting Public Trust

Mayor Carolyn Parrish said the awards demonstrate Mississauga’s commitment to responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

“Mississauga has a long record of responsible financial management. These awards show we continue to hold ourselves to a high standard. For residents, that matters. You deserve to know how your tax dollars are managed and how City decisions support the services you rely on every day.”

Marisa Chiu, Commissioner of Corporate Services, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, said transparent financial reporting helps residents understand how the City allocates resources.

“Clear financial planning and reporting help build public trust. The City’s Business Plan & Budget guides decisions about how we use limited resources, deliver services and plan for Mississauga’s future.”

Commitment to Financial Accountability

Founded in 1906, the Government Finance Officers Association represents more than 20,000 public finance professionals across Canada and the United States and promotes excellence in government financial management.

The latest awards reinforce Mississauga’s longstanding reputation for responsible budgeting, transparent reporting and effective financial planning as the city continues to invest in services and infrastructure for a growing population.
