Mississauga Faces Flooding After Heavy Rain, More Rain Expected
Mississauga – Mississauga is grappling with the aftermath of heavy rain that struck the city yesterday, leading to widespread flooding, traffic disruptions, and dangerous road conditions. While much of the water has receded, the city remains under a rainfall warning, with more rain expected later today.
City and Regional crews, alongside Peel Regional Police and Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, have worked tirelessly to clear floodwaters from major roads. Thankfully, there are no road closures at this time, but residents are urged to remain cautious as wet conditions persist in some areas.
Parks and Recreation Impacted
All City parks are currently open, but caution is advised, particularly in areas near rivers, creeks, or stormwater ponds. Permitted picnics are proceeding as planned, except in parks still affected by flooding. Residents are encouraged to call 311 to confirm the status of their picnic locations. Additionally, all spray pads, playgrounds, and leash-free zones are operational.
Trail and Sports Field Closures
Several trails, especially those near Cooksville Creek and Little Etobicoke Creek, remain hazardous. The City has put up signs and barricades in flooded areas, and residents are asked to respect these safety measures.
All City sports fields will remain closed until Monday, August 19, as Park staff assess the damage caused by the recent rain. Fields will reopen once they are deemed safe for use.
MiWay Transit Resumes Normal Operations
The heavy rain caused delays on several MiWay routes yesterday, but service has now returned to normal. With additional rainfall in the forecast, MiWay riders are advised to check MiWay.ca for the latest service updates.
Safety Measures and Precautions
Mississauga residents are reminded to monitor Environment Canada for ongoing weather warnings and to exercise caution, particularly in flood-prone areas. Residents are urged to avoid stormwater ponds, culverts, and areas with ponding water. It is also important not to open sewer grates or travel through flooded areas.
