Mississauga Encourages Residents to Celebrate Safely This New Year’s Eve

MISSISSAUGA – As the countdown to 2025 begins, the City of Mississauga is urging residents to prioritize safety and community respect during their New Year’s celebrations. Whether enjoying the festivities at Mississauga Celebration Square or hosting celebrations at home, the City has outlined guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable transition into the new year.

Fireworks Guidelines

Mississauga Celebration Square will once again host its New Year’s Eve 2025 event, complete with fireworks, live music, food trucks, and skating. For those planning a quieter evening at home, the City permits the use of fireworks on private property from dusk on December 31, 2024, until 1 a.m. on January 1, 2025.

However, those wishing to set off fireworks in public spaces, such as streets or parks, must secure a permit in advance. The City reminds residents to follow the Fireworks By-law and remain considerate of their neighbors during the festivities.

Disposing of fireworks safely is equally important. The City advises submerging used or unused fireworks in water overnight before sealing them in a plastic bag and placing them in the garbage to prevent any risks of fire. To report illegal firework use, residents can visit mississauga.ca/fireworks or call 311. Fireworks complaints should not be directed to 911.

Tips for Fire Safety

If hosting friends and family, the City emphasizes fire safety in the kitchen. Residents are reminded to:

  • Avoid leaving hot appliances unattended.
  • Keep flammable items away from stovetops.
  • Refrain from cooking under the influence of alcohol or cannabis.
  • Avoid using portable gas-fueled cooking appliances indoors.

For those frying or using oil, the City recommends using a thermostat-controlled deep fryer to prevent overheating and potential fires.

Temporary Parking Permits for Guests

For those hosting overnight guests, temporary parking permits allow extended on-street parking beyond the usual five-hour limit and during the prohibited 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. period. Additionally, on-street parking restrictions are relaxed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day between 8 a.m. and midnight.

However, permits may be suspended during snow events to ensure road safety and allow for efficient snow clearing. Residents are encouraged to check for updates before finalizing parking plans.

A Message of Kindness and Respect

The City reminds residents to be considerate during the celebrations and to extend kindness to neighbors and City staff working throughout the holiday season. By adhering to these guidelines, Mississauga can ensure a joyful and safe welcome to 2025.
