Mississauga Earns Triple Recognition for Financial Excellence
City receives three prestigious awards from Government Finance Officers Association
MISSISSAUGA — The City of Mississauga has once again been recognized for its high standards in municipal finance, earning three distinguished awards from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada.
The awards—Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, Canadian Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting, and Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award—reflect the city’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and clear communication in financial planning and reporting.
The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award was awarded for Mississauga’s 2025–2028 Business Plan & 2025 Budget, marking the 37th consecutive year the city has received this honour. The award recognizes budget documents that function not only as financial plans, but also as policy blueprints, operational guides, and communication tools for the public.
The Canadian Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting was presented for the city’s 2023 Financial and Sustainability Report. To receive this award for the 27th straight year, Mississauga had to exceed Public Sector Accounting Standards and present a compelling financial narrative accessible to a broad audience.
The Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award was given for the city’s 2023 Financial Report Highlights, an easily digestible summary of its full financial report. This marks the eighth year in a row Mississauga has received the award, which aims to improve public engagement and financial literacy.
Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish praised the city’s finance team and council:
“We are proud to be recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association for over three decades, highlighting the City of Mississauga’s commitment to municipal budgeting and fiscal responsibility. This recognition is also a testament to the hard work done by our City Council and staff to create a budget and financial documents that help communicate important and complex financial information to residents in clear and concise way.”
Founded in 1906, the GFOA represents more than 20,000 public finance officials across North America. The association’s mission is to promote excellence in public finance through education, leadership, and best practices.
