Mississauga Cyclists Recognized for Promoting Active Transportation

Mississauga — The Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC) is inviting the community to nominate local cyclists who have gone above and beyond to promote active transportation in the city. The MCAC awards celebrate residents, businesses, and advocates who champion cycling and other forms of sustainable transportation.

The prestigious Phil Green Recognition Award, named after founding MCAC member Phil Green, will once again honor individuals who have worked diligently throughout 2024 to advance safe cycling in Mississauga. Phil Green, a devoted advocate for cycling safety, remains an inspiration to many in the community.

In addition to the Phil Green Award, MCAC has introduced three new awards this year to foster inclusivity in the cycling community:

  • Cycling Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Recognition Award: This award will celebrate those who have actively worked to improve access to cycling resources and events for marginalized communities, including people with disabilities and low-income residents.
  • Business Recognition Award: Open to businesses or business owners, this award recognizes efforts to encourage cycling, such as offering safe bicycle parking or discounts to cyclists.
  • Youth/School Cycling Recognition Award: This award highlights students or student groups who have successfully promoted safe cycling among their peers.

Eligibility and Nomination Process

Nominees must be residents of Mississauga and cannot be members of MCAC or employees of the City of Mississauga or Region of Peel in any cycling-related capacity. The same individual or group cannot have received an MCAC award in the last four years.

Nominations must include a detailed description of the nominee’s contributions to cycling, along with at least two letters of support from individuals or organizations. Self-nominations are permitted. The nomination deadline is Friday, December 13, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.

MCAC will announce the winners at a City Council meeting in early 2025. For more details on the awards and to download nomination forms, visit mississauga.ca/cycling.
