Mississauga Honours Local Cycling Advocates with 2025 Recognition Awards
City recognizes community leaders promoting cycling safety, inclusion and active transportation
MISSISSAUGA — Mississauga City Council has recognized three local cycling advocates for their contributions to promoting safer, more inclusive and community-focused cycling initiatives across the city.
The awards were presented Tuesday on behalf of the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC), recognizing leadership in cycling education, accessibility, inclusion and youth engagement.
This year’s recipients include:
- Rahul Mehta — 2025 Phil Green Recognition Award
- Kevin Saldanha — 2025 Cycling Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Recognition Award
- Lucas Caravaggio — 2025 Youth/School Cycling Recognition Award
Rahul Mehta recognized for newcomer cycling programs
Rahul Mehta received the 2025 Phil Green Recognition Award for his work supporting cycling education and access initiatives in Mississauga.
As an Active Living Specialist with the Peel Multicultural Council, Mehta helps lead the Mississauga Cycles project, a mentorship and bike-access program aimed at helping newcomers and residents learn to ride safely and confidently.
The program also teaches:
- Basic bicycle maintenance
- Flat tire repair
- Cycling safety skills
- Community riding education
City officials say Mehta’s efforts have helped create more welcoming cycling spaces for residents of varying ages and skill levels.
The award honours the legacy of late Mississauga resident Phil Green, a founding member of MCAC known for advocating safe cycling and sustainable transportation throughout the city.
Kevin Saldanha honoured for inclusive cycling advocacy
Kevin Saldanha received the 2025 Cycling Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Recognition Award for helping expand cycling accessibility for older adults and individuals with mobility challenges.
Saldanha established the local chapter of Cycling Without Age – Mississauga, an international initiative that provides free trishaw rides for seniors and residents with limited mobility.
The movement, which originated in Denmark in 2012, uses specially designed three-wheeled electric-assisted bicycles to help participants experience outdoor rides and community engagement.
Mississauga officials said Saldanha’s volunteer work has helped promote inclusion and connection through cycling experiences that may otherwise be inaccessible to many residents.
Young cyclist recognized for promoting safe riding
Twelve-year-old Mississauga resident Lucas Caravaggio was recognized with the 2025 Youth/School Cycling Recognition Award.
City officials say Lucas has demonstrated a strong commitment to cycling safety and responsible riding habits from a young age.
According to the City, Lucas:
- Bikes to school almost daily
- Consistently wears a helmet
- Follows school cycling safety procedures
- Serves as a positive role model for younger students
Officials praised his commitment to safe and respectful cycling practices within the community.
City continues promoting active transportation
The awards come as Mississauga continues expanding cycling infrastructure and active transportation initiatives across the city.
Ward 2 Councillor Alvin Tedjo, Chair of the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee, praised this year’s award recipients for helping strengthen cycling culture throughout Mississauga.
“This year’s award recipients are making a remarkable impact on the cycling community in Mississauga,” added Ward 3 Councillor Chris Fonseca, Vice-Chair of MCAC.
The City says programs led by residents and community organizations continue playing an important role in promoting:
- Cycling safety
- Active transportation
- Community wellness
- Inclusive mobility opportunities
