Mississauga Cracks Down on Parking Violations with Increased Fines Starting April 1

MISSISSAUGA, ON — Mississauga drivers can expect steeper fines for parking violations starting April 1, 2025, as the City moves to address growing concerns around road safety and non-compliance.

City Council approved updates this week to Mississauga’s Traffic By-law and Administrative Penalty By-law, following a February staff report that recommended fine increases for 76 parking-related offences. The move comes in response to a sharp rise in service requests and infractions since 2021.

In 2024, the City received more than 182,000 parking-related service requests and issued over 208,000 penalties — a 75 per cent and 60 per cent increase, respectively, compared to 2021.

“We’ve experienced a notable rise in non-compliance with parking regulations in Mississauga,” said Raj Sheth, Commissioner of Corporate Services. “This not only causes traffic congestion by impeding traffic but also creates serious safety risks.”

What’s Changing April 1:

  • 66 parking offences under the Traffic By-law will see a 38 per cent increase in fines.
  • An additional $10 fine will be added to the most common violations, including:
    • Parking in a prohibited area
    • Parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.
    • Parking at a paid machine without displaying proof of payment
  • A $50 fine increase will apply to offences deemed high-risk to public safety, such as:
    • Parking or stopping in a bike lane
    • Parking in school zones
    • Parking on sidewalks or crosswalks
    • Parking within three metres of a fire hydrant
  • Additional $50 increases apply to infractions under the Fire Route and Accessible Parking by-laws.

Lakefront Penalty Zone Expansion: The City is also expanding the Lakefront Increased Penalty Zone, where fines apply from May 1 to September 30 each year. Previously capped at $100, four violations in this zone will now see even higher penalties, including:

  • Stopping on a sidewalk
  • Parking near fire hydrants
  • Parking or stopping in school zones

The zone’s west boundary will shift from Meadow Wood Road to the entire city’s west limit, extending from east to west city borders.

Mississauga officials say the stricter penalties are part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow, reduce safety hazards, and ensure equitable access to roads and sidewalks.
