Mississauga Reports Progress on Accessibility Goals as National AccessAbility Week Begins

Mississauga accessibility plan reaches major milestone during National AccessAbility Week

MISSISSAUGA — The City of Mississauga is highlighting significant progress in its efforts to remove barriers and improve accessibility, reporting that 67 of 80 commitments outlined in its Multi-Year Accessibility Plan have now been completed.

The update was released as the city prepares to mark National AccessAbility Week, which runs from May 31 to June 6 and recognizes the contributions of people with disabilities while promoting greater accessibility and inclusion across Canada.

According to the City’s 2025 Accessibility Annual Status Update, progress has been made across all six focus areas of the Multi-Year Accessibility Plan (2023-2028), with initiatives aimed at improving access to services, facilities, employment opportunities and public spaces.

Improvements across City services

The City says accessibility considerations are increasingly being integrated into municipal decision-making and operations.

Highlights from the latest update include:

  • Enhanced governance through accessibility-focused Communities of Practice and procurement frameworks.
  • Expanded customer service initiatives, including the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program and Ride Kind transit campaign.
  • Improved access to digital information through accessible document training and website enhancements.
  • New employment initiatives aimed at reducing barriers and supporting inclusive hiring practices.
  • Accessibility upgrades at transit stops and shelters, alongside near-universal accessible transit boarding.
  • Facility improvements guided by the launch of Facilities Accessibility Design Standards (FADS) 2.0.

The City also noted progress toward the development of a new barrier-free fire station and upgrades to public facilities designed using universal accessibility principles.

Accessibility remains a priority

Mayor Carolyn Parrish emphasized the importance of continuing to remove barriers throughout the community.

“One in four Mississauga residents lives with a disability. That’s why it is so important that we continue with our efforts to remove barriers and create a city where everyone has the opportunity to live fully. Accessibility remains a top priority for the City,” Parrish said.

Raj Sheth, Commissioner of Community Services, said the annual update demonstrates measurable results across municipal operations.

“This update shows real, measurable progress across City services, facilities and programs. From accessible transit and public spaces to inclusive hiring and digital communications, accessibility is being embedded into everyday decision-making across the organization,” said Sheth.

National AccessAbility Week event planned

As part of National AccessAbility Week, the City will host an Accessible Tree Planting event at Dellwood Park on June 2 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The event has been designed to reduce participation barriers by providing accessible pathways, adaptive tools and on-site support to ensure residents of all abilities can take part.

City officials say the event reflects Mississauga’s broader commitment to creating inclusive opportunities for community participation.

The City continues to work with the Accessibility Advisory Committee, the Staff Accessibility Resource Group and municipal staff to guide future accessibility priorities and implementation efforts.
