Mike Savage Appointed New Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia
Ottawa, Ontario – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced the appointment of Mike Savage as the new Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Savage, who has a long history of public service, will succeed the Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, who has completed his term.
Savage’s appointment comes after a career that includes significant political and civic leadership roles. He served as the Member of Parliament for Dartmouth—Cole Harbour from 2004 to 2011, where he advocated for social policies, economic development, and environmental initiatives. More recently, he completed 12 years as the Mayor of Halifax Regional Municipality, where he was known for his focus on economic growth, affordable housing, climate action, and social inclusion.

During his tenure as mayor, Savage led efforts to make Halifax more inclusive and sustainable, launching initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving accessibility for people with disabilities. His work in these areas earned him recognition not only in Nova Scotia but also on the national stage, positioning him as a prominent figure in Canada’s urban leadership.
Prime Minister Trudeau expressed confidence in Savage’s ability to uphold the responsibilities associated with the Lieutenant Governor’s role. “Mike Savage has shown time and again his dedication to public service and community building,” Trudeau said. “As Lieutenant Governor, I am certain he will continue to make meaningful contributions to Nova Scotia’s prosperity and well-being.”
Lieutenant Governors act as the Crown’s representative in their respective provinces, fulfilling duties such as granting Royal Assent to provincial laws and attending ceremonial functions. Appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister, they typically serve terms of at least five years.
Outgoing Lieutenant Governor Arthur J. LeBlanc was appointed in 2017 and has played a significant role in provincial and ceremonial events, including recognizing the achievements of Nova Scotians across various sectors. The Prime Minister acknowledged LeBlanc’s dedicated service, noting his commitment to upholding the traditions and duties of the office.
Mike Savage will officially take on his new role later this month. His appointment marks a continuation of his career-long commitment to public service, where he is expected to bring his vision for a more inclusive and sustainable province to the forefront of his duties as the Queen’s representative in Nova Scotia.
