Mexican Dream Premieres at Heartland Film Festival and Screens in Spain

Toronto — Mexican Dream, the highly anticipated documentary by London-based Mexican filmmaker Laura Plancarte, is making its debut at the Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis. In addition to the U.S. premiere, the film will also have two screenings in Spain, continuing to garner international attention for its heartfelt portrayal of family, independence, and perseverance.

The documentary follows the story of Malena, a woman navigating the complexities of motherhood, work, and personal dreams in Mexico City. With the looming pressures of in vitro fertilization (IVF) and a tense relationship with her teenage children, Malena faces a personal and professional crossroads. Mexican Dream offers a candid exploration of her struggles and determination to reclaim her life.

Critics have praised the film for its emotional depth and unconventional style. POV Magazine commended Plancarte’s approach, stating, “Plancarte’s hybrid film may be experimental and unorthodox, but the payoff is a crowd-pleasing melodramatic work of inspiration and happy tears.” Similarly, Cinemacy hailed Plancarte’s direction, noting, “Director Laura Plancarte crafts a totally absorbing vessel in which we witness Malena continue to fight for what she wants.”

In the film, Malena’s journey takes center stage as she balances her desire to start a business with the challenges of family dynamics. Her partner’s ultimatum — to leave if IVF treatment fails — adds to her burden. Yet, throughout it all, Malena finds strength in her community of co-workers and family, making her story one of resilience and hope.

Behind the Scenes
Plancarte, whose previous works include HERMANOS and NON WESTERN, has built a reputation for creating authentic and emotionally charged narratives. Her collaboration with non-professional actors, including Malena herself, adds a layer of realism to the film. In her director’s statement, Plancarte reflects on this experience, sharing, “The film’s greatest challenge has also been its greatest beauty: the collaborative process of making it. The audience will witness the authenticity and power of Malena and her family on screen.”

About Malena
Malena, or María Magdalena Reyes, was born in Hidalgo, Mexico, and has lived through a wide range of experiences, from owning her own business to working as a domestic worker. Now back in her hometown, she runs a small business selling jewelry, sweets, and clothes. Her involvement in Mexican Dream not only allowed her to tell her story but also gave her a chance to explore filmmaking, as she contributed as a co-writer and learned technical skills like sound recording.

Heartland Film Festival
The Heartland Film Festival, founded in 1991, has become a beacon for thoughtful and diverse storytelling. It is known for curating films that inspire, ignite conversation, and shift perspectives. Mexican Dream fits seamlessly into this tradition, offering viewers a powerful, authentic portrayal of one woman’s journey to independence.
