Metallica Donates $40,000 to Daily Bread Food Bank Amid Soaring Hunger Crisis in Toronto
TORONTO — Global rock legends Metallica have once again stepped up to support Toronto’s growing hunger crisis, donating $40,000 to Daily Bread Food Bank through their charitable foundation, All Within My Hands (AWMH). The donation, announced April 28, comes on the heels of two sold-out shows at Scotiabank Arena as part of the band’s M72 World Tour.
The contribution will help Daily Bread provide approximately 40,000 meals to those in need — a critical boost as food insecurity in the city reaches historic highs. Between January and March 2025, Daily Bread member food banks recorded more than 903,000 client visits, a fourfold increase compared to the same period in 2020.
“We want to wholeheartedly thank the members of Metallica for this incredibly generous donation,” said Neil Hetherington, CEO of Daily Bread Food Bank. “Right now, far too many are struggling, and these funds will help support food bank clients as the hunger crisis in our city reaches an all-time high. This gift means even more considering the band has a history of donating to the Daily Bread cause.”
Toronto declared food insecurity a state of emergency in December 2024 following findings in the Who’s Hungry report, which revealed that more than 1 in 10 Torontonians are now turning to food banks — double the number from just two years prior.
“Learning that there is widespread food insecurity in Toronto reminds us just how many people are faced with making tough decisions and need assistance,” said Renée Richardson, Director of Philanthropy at All Within My Hands. “We are thankful Daily Bread is there to bridge the gap for so many families.”
Metallica previously supported Daily Bread in 2016, donating proceeds from a surprise show at Toronto’s Opera House. Since founding AWMH in 2017, the band has raised over $20 million globally for hunger relief, education, and local emergency services.
Daily Bread distributes food and fresh-cooked meals to 129 member agencies and 205 food programs across the city. The organization relies heavily on public donations to purchase produce, protein, and dairy products to meet skyrocketing demand.
